Private Reindeer Farm Visit

Explore the Sami Culture

The Indigenous people of the Arctic
Step into the world of the Sámi – the Indigenous people of the Arctic – and discover a culture deeply rooted in tradition, nature, and resilience. This immersive experience offers a rare opportunity to connect with a Sámi reindeer herder and gain firsthand insight into a way of life that has been passed down through generations.

The Reindeer Connection
Upon arrival at the reindeer farm, you’ll be welcomed not just as a visitor, but as a guest on sacred Sámi land. Reindeer are far more than animals – they are at the heart of Sámi identity and culture. Feeding and interacting with them allows you to understand their role in Sámi traditions, spirituality, and daily survival in the Arctic.

Inside the Lavvu
In a traditional lavvu – a Sámi tent warmed by a fire – you’ll gather with your host and hear personal stories about life as a reindeer herder. Through these intimate conversations, you’ll learn about Sámi customs, family roles, and the seasonal rhythms of reindeer herding, all shaped by a close connection to nature.

Traditions, Struggles & Strength
This is also a moment to reflect on the deeper story of the Sámi people – their rich history, their efforts to preserve their language and land rights, and their ongoing fight to protect a way of life that has endured centuries of change. Your host may share experiences of both pride and challenge, giving voice to a people too often left out of mainstream narratives.

A Taste of Culture
As the fire crackles, you’ll enjoy a traditional Sámi meal, often bidos, a hearty reindeer stew cooked over the flames. Food is more than sustenance here – it’s storytelling. You may also be treated to joik, the traditional Sámi way of singing, where emotion is expressed through haunting melodies that honour people, animals, and the land itself.

An Unforgettable Encounter
This is more than a cultural visit – it’s a chance to be welcomed into the living history of Sápmi. Through conversation, food, music, and meaningful connection, you’ll leave with not only new knowledge but a deeper appreciation for the enduring spirit of the Sámi people and their place in the Arctic world.
