Discover Tromsø’s World War II History & the Sinking of the Tirpitz

Join us and experience Tromsø’s history during the Second World War. Walk through the city centre and visit some of the places in Tromsø that held an important role during the war.

Learn about the rich history of the Arctic and the battles that took place in the region. After the city walk, you’ll be picked up for a drive to Kvaløya, the fifth most significant island in Norway, just west of Tromsö. From there, you will visit Håköya, where in 1944, the battleship Tirpitz was sunk.

The Citywalk

You’ll start the walk at the King Haakon statue, where you’ll learn about the king who said no to surrender. Visit Skansen, Tromsø’s oldest standing building, which served administrative and communication purposes during the Nazi occupation. Stand before what used to be the Gestapo headquarters, where members of the resistance were imprisoned and tortured. The whole walk is just over 1 kilometre and rich with history.

The drive

Only 100 meters from the last stop on the city walk, you’ll be picked up and continue the historical adventure by car. From there, we will drive past the bishop’s garden, which once housed the entire Norwegian government during the war. We will stop at the Commonwealth graves where the brave soldiers who took down Tirpitz now rest. Next stop is at the very south of the island of Tromsø, Sydspissen. This part of the island was once the place of a nazi prison camp. Finally, we will drive over to Håköya and visit the location where the Allies sank Tirpitz, one of the most enormous battleships of its time. Finally, we will drive back to Tromsø city centre, and you never know, you might even see some reindeer along the way.
