Frequently Asked Questions
Read This Before Booking
To ensure the best possible Arctic experience, please take a moment to read this important summary:
- The Northern Lights cannot be guaranteed. They are a natural phenomenon. Our role is to take you to the best possible locations under the best possible conditions.
- Weather changes quickly in the Arctic. Snow, wind, and cold are part of the experience and do not automatically lead to cancellations.
- Book multiple Northern Lights nights if possible. This is the single best way to increase your chances. Extra tours can be cancelled free of charge up to 48 hours before departure (for tours operated by us).
- Dress properly. Wool layers are essential. Cotton does not keep you warm in Arctic conditions.
- Guided tours outperform self-driving. Local knowledge, flexibility, and safety make a real difference in winter.
If these points align with your expectations, you are ready for an unforgettable Arctic adventure with Legendary Adventure.
-
Tromsø is located directly under the aurora oval, making it one of the most reliable places in the world to see the Northern Lights from September to early April.
The surrounding mountains and fjords create multiple microclimates, allowing us to move between coastal, inland, and sometimes Finnish areas to escape clouds and find clearer skies.
In addition, Tromsø offers excellent infrastructure, restaurants, accommodation, and easy access to wilderness — the perfect balance of comfort and adventure.
-
- September – October: Autumn colors, milder temperatures, and the start of the aurora season
- November – January: Snow-covered landscapes, polar night, and dramatic Arctic light
- February – April: Longer days, stable winter conditions, and strong aurora opportunities
There is no single “best” month — staying several nights always increases your chances.
-
We recommend staying at least 5 nights, and ideally more. The longer you stay, the better your chances of experiencing clear skies and strong aurora activity.
Many guests pre-book several Northern Lights tours and cancel unused ones later according to the cancellation policy.
Before You Book
-
If you booked through an Online Travel Agency (OTA) such as GetYourGuide or Viator, the platform handles: – Payments – Cancellations – Changes – Refunds
Legendary Adventure operates the tour but cannot modify or refund OTA bookings. All changes must be made directly through the OTA.
-
Secure online payment options are provided during the booking process.
-
Cancellation policies depend on where you booked: – Direct bookings: The policy stated in your confirmation email applies – OTA bookings: The OTA’s policy applies
Always check your booking confirmation for exact terms.
-
Yes. Tours operated directly by Legendary Adventure can be cancelled free of charge up to 48 hours before departure for a full refund.
This allows you to safely pre-book multiple nights and maximize your chances.
-
No. Weather conditions and aurora activity cannot be controlled.
Tours are only cancelled if conditions are unsafe (e.g. road closures or official warnings). If we cancel for safety reasons, you will be offered a refund or rebooking according to your booking channel.
-
No. This is a common misunderstanding.
The KP index mainly shows how far south the aurora oval stretches — not how strong the Northern Lights will be in Tromsø. Since Tromsø lies directly under the oval, auroras are often visible even at low KP values.
Clouds in Tromsø city often mean clear skies just 1–3 hours inland. If a tour is running, it means we have identified areas with good chances.
-
Safety is always our top priority. We continuously monitor: – Weather forecasts – Road conditions – Wind and visibility – Official safety warnings.
Snow, wind, or changing weather are part of the Arctic experience and do not automatically lead to cancellation.
