Svalbard ski & sail

Fjord sailing and skiing adventure on Svalbard

Where nature rules

Svalbard is, without doubt, one of the most exotic and challenging destinations for ski touring trips.
With a road network of only 50km, the mountains are best accessed by boat. However, we must wait until spring in order to sail through, since the ice covers the coast of Svalbard throughout the winter. This time of the year the sun never sets, and we have 24h daylight for skiing and sailing.

The vessel: Duen III is a 72 ft ketch-rigged sailing vessel built in 1987 and designed by Robert Perry, a well renowned American boat designer. The boat has a comfortable wheelhouse, a big saloon and six cabins. Has been around the world twice. The boat is well equipped for arctic sailing with radiators in each cabin and an inside steering position. In total there are three different seating areas, giving plenty of personal space for everyone on board. Outside on the spacious deck, there is a ladder towards the crow's nest (ships lookout point located in the main mast), and two big chests to store your adventure gear. Cabins: Choose between two styles of cabins, double bed or bunk cabins. Each cabin has en suite toilets and shower facilities. All cabins have clean linens and towels included for the voyage.

This is a standard program that may have to be adjusted to the tide, weather and snow conditions.
A normal program runs from Saturday to Saturday with 6 days of ski touring.

Day 1
Travel day.
We meet in Longyearbyen, where we board the Duen III, our home for the week.
After a briefing from our captain regarding the safety procedures for the boat, we cast off and sail out for a week's adventures among the mountains and fjords.

Day 2-7
We make different ski tours every day. Which tours we choose depend on several factors. The wind, tides, snow conditions, avalanche danger and of course what you desire. Your mountain guide determines the tour for the day in cooperation with the captain. Meanwhile, we are sailing through the fjords and scout for wildlife in the sea and along the beaches. Anyone who wants to can fish from the boat. If you catch a large one it might go directly into the kitchen and will be part of the evenings fish soup.

Day 8
Travel day.
Check out from the boat in the morning. After 6 days of skiing, we return to Longyearbyen and fly back home. If you would like to, you can extend your trip and stay extra nights in Longyearbyen, Svalbard.
